ThinkRF, based in Ottawa, Ontario, is a Canadian leader in wireless spectrum intelligence, delivering advanced solutions for real-time RF analysis, interference detection, and wireless network monitoring. The company’s flagship platform, Spectrum eXperience Management (SXM), enables regulators, telecom providers, and industrial operators to secure, optimize, and scale wireless infrastructure. Building on its global track record in high-performance spectrum monitoring, ThinkRF is now applying its expertise to strengthen wireless connectivity in critical industries such as mining.
Through support from the CIT Development and Commercialization Program and in partnership with the NORCAT Underground Centre, ThinkRF is enhancing its SXM platform to address the unique wireless challenges of underground mining. Reliable 4G and 5G connectivity is critical to enable automation, robotics, and industrial IoT in mining operations, but networks in these environments are often vulnerable to interference, rogue signals, and performance degradation. By deploying edge-based sensors and a cloud-enabled analytics dashboard, the project will provide continuous spectrum monitoring, anomaly detection, and real-time insights into network performance. Testing in NORCAT’s operating mine will validate the system’s capabilities in harsh, complex environments and ensure the solution is tailored for mining and other industrial applications.
The project will position ThinkRF to bring a commercial-ready SXM solution to the mining sector and beyond, creating new opportunities for Ontario-made wireless monitoring technologies. Anticipated impacts include new high-skill jobs in RF engineering, software development, and data science, alongside significant new revenue streams from hardware, software, and deployment services. By enabling more secure and reliable 5G networks, ThinkRF will strengthen safety, efficiency, and productivity in mining operations while contributing to Ontario’s leadership in advanced communications and digital transformation.
