Project

The “SpotCheck Compliance AI” project will develop and deploy a multimodal AI verification engine that automatically validates images and documents of personal protective equipment (PPE) for manufacturing and warehouse workers. This AI-powered compliance tool will replace manual safety checks by classifying uploaded photos and documents—such as safety boot images or certifications—and returning natural language verification results with clear feedback for workers. The project, executed in partnership with ventureLAB, will fine-tune and train a compact AI model (Gemma 3 4B) optimized for cost and accuracy, deployable through a cloud-based API integrated into the Spotwork platform.

Impact & Outcomes

The project will produce a production-ready API and browser-based prototype, enabling real-time automated compliance checks for Spotwork users. Within 12 months, Spotwork expects to achieve $150,000–$200,000 in annual operational savings, create two new AI-focused roles, and increase onboarding efficiency for over 100,000 Ontario workers. Over the long term, the company projects faster job placement, improved workplace safety, and scalable new revenue streams through hosted API offerings. The project strengthens Ontario’s AI and advanced manufacturing ecosystem by introducing an industry-first compliance automation model for high-turnover sectors.
