Pigeon Comm Inc.

About

Pigeon Comm Inc. is a Waterloo-based technology company specializing in custom RF and secure, scalable IoT terminal platforms for industrial environments. The company focuses on developing low-power, high-efficiency RF communication systems and embedded devices that enable reliable data transmission in challenging conditions such as underground mines and remote operations. By combining expertise in RF engineering, embedded systems, and AI, Pigeon Comm is building solutions that support real-time monitoring, communication, and safety in complex industrial settings.

Project

This project focuses on developing a low-power, energy-efficient tracking and safety system for underground and remote mining environments, supported by the CIT Development and Commercialization program and leveraging the NORCAT Underground Centre as the Technology Development Site. The solution centers on wearable smart devices and a distributed RF-based sensor network that enables real-time personnel tracking, location awareness, and critical safety functions such as man-down detection and emergency alerts. The project includes pilot deployment and validation in a real underground setting to assess communication reliability, system resilience, and performance under conditions such as dust, moisture, and non-line-of-sight propagation.

Impact

The project will advance Pigeon Comm’s IoT-based safety platform toward commercialization by delivering a pilot-validated system designed for real-world mining operations. By improving real-time visibility of personnel and enabling faster emergency response, the solution supports enhanced worker safety, reduced operational risk, and improved situational awareness. Outcomes include new job creation, expanded deployment opportunities across mining operations, and strengthened Ontario leadership in connected worker safety technologies.
