Nicoya Lifesciences

About

Nicoya Lifesciences Inc., founded in 2012 and headquartered in Kitchener, Ontario, develops advanced biosensor technology that enables real-time molecular interaction analysis for academic, biotech, and pharmaceutical researchers. Nicoya’s high precision instrumentation is used globally to accelerate drug discover and life sciences innovation. With 85 employees – 45 in Ontario – Nicoya combines nanotechnology and digital microfluidics in its consumable manufacturing processes. Growing consumables demand and the introduction of new cartridge designs have created a need to enhance production scalability and efficiency through advanced manufacturing practices.

Project

The project aims to transform Nicoya’s biosensor cartridge assembly from a manual, batch-limited process into a high-throughput, precision manufacturing system. Key innovations include redesigned multi-sensor fixtures to boost throughput, optimized adhesive bonding, and integrated data-driven process controls for consistent quality. Collaboration with Lambton College’s AI4AM Technology Development Site will support automation integration, testing, and optimization of assembly methods. These upgrades will reduce cycle times, improve component alignment precision, and ensure robust sensor assembly performance at larger scale.

Impact & Outcomes

The initiative will deliver new fixture systems, validated equipment, and quality-controlled assembly workflows that collectively increase throughput while cutting production costs. Within one year, Nicoya expects measurable gains in productivity and profitability, enabling expansion of cartridge offerings and enhanced supply reliability for global research clients. The project supports Ontario’s advanced manufacturing ecosystem through technology adoption, supplier engagement, and workforce upskilling. Long-term impacts include job creation in R&D and operations, strengthened local supply chains, and broader sectoral benefits in life sciences manufacturing competitiveness.
