n!Biomachines designs, develops and manufactures fit-for-purpose bioreactors and related equipment for next-gen bioprocessing. Their bioprocessing systems ensure high quality, safe and efficient operations, optimized for clients to grow cells and extract proteins people use daily: milk proteins such as casein and whey, egg white proteins like ovalbumin, and others including pharmaceutical ingredients. Other applications of n!Biomachines bioreactors include waste stream valorization, biofuels, antibiotics, medicine, and cosmetics.
With the support of the Sector Adoption Program, this project aims to develop a next-generation AI-powered bioreactor sensor which integrates key metabolic measurements, eliminating the need for costly, time consuming, and segregated sensing and testing technologies. By integrating machine learning with proven bioreactor engineering, the project scope is to create an inexpensive, intelligent, adaptive sensor capable of optimizing bioprocesses in real time, minimizing human error from the process, reduce waste, and allowing the market to produce novel foods that are safer, on an industrial scale, more environmentally friendly, and better for end users.
The project will deliver a fully functional AI-powered bioreactor platform prototype, combining physical infrastructure with advanced machine learning for real-time process optimization. This outcome addresses critical limitations in current fermentation and biomanufacturing practices, offering a scalable, intelligent, and more efficient alternative to existing systems. As a result of the project, n!Biomachines forecasts an increase in revenue of $1,500,000 by year three and the need to add 10-15 full-time positions. The development of the new system will support more widespread use of bioreactors in Ontario and help create a biotech food hub in the province.
