Jitto is a wholesale produce distributor based in Ontario. The company combines logistics, supply chain operations, and modern technology to bring fresher, more affordable produce to their customers. Jitto’s goal is to drive down food costs in rural communities within Ontario, improve transparency, and make procurement faster and more reliable for independent retailers, foodservice operators, and institutional buyers. To achieve that goal, Jitto builds tools in-house: e-commerce ordering platforms to backend automations and machine learning systems. They use these tools every day to run a leaner, more efficient business.

Project

Jitto’s newest solution is an AI-powered system that reads supplier price lists which are sent as PDFs, spreadsheets, or emails and turns them into structured data that’s ready to use. As food distribution prices change quickly and every supplier sends their list in a different format, someone has to manually open each file, check for changes, and retype everything into a procurement system which is slow and prone to errors.  With the support of the Development and Commercialization program, Jitto will access the ventureLAB Technology Development site to build a human-in-the-loop feedback and QA system for the company’s AI-powered price list reader.

Impact

This project will deliver a working human-in-the-loop quality QA system that supports Jitto’s AI-powered price list reader with a validated software tool that lets their team review, correct, and approve supplier pricing data before it is ingested in downstream Jitto systems.  The increased  efficiency created by the tool will translate into approximately  $150,000 to $200,000 of cost savings per year and create two new full-time positions within the first year.
