In collaboration with the McMaster Manufacturing Research Institute (MMRI) and supported by the CIT Development and Commercialization program, this project focuses on developing BeltView.ai, an AI-powered system for real-time conveyor belt monitoring in mining operations. The solution uses computer vision and edge AI to detect belt wear, identify splice defects, and flag potential failures before they occur, all without interrupting operations. By combining ruggedized hardware, cameras, and AI models trained on conveyor belt data, the system brings continuous monitoring directly to the source. The project will validate the technology in a controlled test environment, demonstrating how early detection can reduce downtime, improve maintenance planning, and enhance safety.
By introducing real-time, AI-driven conveyor belt monitoring, this project supports improved safety, reduced downtime, and more efficient maintenance practices across the mining sector. The technology enables operators to move from reactive to predictive maintenance, helping prevent failures and optimize performance. For J-Squared, this creates a clear pathway to commercialization of a new product line, expands opportunities within mining and other industrial markets, and supports continued growth of high-skilled jobs and advanced manufacturing capabilities in Ontario.
