Formic AI

About

Formic AI is an Ontario-based developer of trustworthy, explainable AI solutions for regulated industries, including legal, government, and critical infrastructure sectors. Founded in 2021, the company has developed the Formic Engine, a proprietary neuro-symbolic AI system that eliminates AI hallucinations and delivers verifiable, citation-based outputs designed to meet the strict requirements of regulatory environments. By transforming unstructured data into structured, auditable insights, Formic enables stakeholders to adopt responsible, trustworthy AI systems.

Project

In collaboration with ICI Innovations Inc. and Cambrian College as the Technology Development Site, this project focuses on integrating Formic’s responsible AI engine into the RIVAS project information management system. The solution embeds AI-powered search, summarization, and metadata automation capabilities directly into workflows for preparing, submitting, and assessing energy and natural resource projects for environmental impact, enabling users to analyze large volumes of project documentation with sentence-level citations linked to original sources. The project will validate the system’s ability to improve transparency, reduce manual review effort, and support faster, more reliable environmental assessment and permitting processes.

Impact

The project strengthens Ontario’s position in responsible AI by advancing a commercially viable solution that improves transparency and efficiency in environmental assessment and permitting workflows. For Formic, it enables entry into the mining, energy, and infrastructure sectors, supports revenue growth through platform integration and licensing opportunities, and validates the technology in a high-value, real-world environment. Broader impacts include improved efficiency for regulatory processes, increased competitiveness for Ontario-based projects, and accelerated adoption of trustworthy AI across critical sectors.
