Engineering Seismology Group Canada Inc. (ESG Solutions) is an Kingston-based provider of subsurface diagnostic solutions for the mining, geotechnical, and energy sectors. Since 1993, the company has delivered microseismic monitoring systems and data services that improve safety, productivity, and risk management in complex underground environments. ESG offers end-to-end solutions including sensor installation, data acquisition, processing, and real-time reporting, and is advancing next-generation sensing technologies to enhance understanding of subsurface conditions.

Project

Supported by the CIT Development and Commercialization program and in collaboration with Cambrian College, Glencore’s Onaping Depth Project, and RockEng as key partners, this project focuses on validating Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology for enhanced seismic monitoring in mining environments. The solution integrates fiber optic sensing with traditional seismic systems to capture high-resolution strain data and detect subtle ground movements such as fault activity and rockmass creep. The project will involve installation, data acquisition, and analysis in a live underground setting, while demonstrating improved monitoring accuracy, integration with existing systems and the ability to refine geomechanical models and forecasting capabilities.

Impact

The project will advance ESG’s DAS technology toward commercialization by delivering a validated, cost-effective solution for improved ground monitoring and risk management in mining operations. By enabling earlier detection of ground movement and reducing operational downtime, the technology supports enhanced worker safety and productivity. Outcomes from this project include new revenue opportunities, creation of high-skilled jobs, and strengthened Ontario leadership in advanced sensing technologies for the mining sector.
