Cstainable Inc. is a Canadian precision ag-tech and climate-tech company dedicated to optimizing the growth of greenhouse vegetable crops. Greenhouses are under-producing by up to 30% due to a key ingredient being limited – carbon dioxide (CO2). Cstainable has developed technology involving the advanced application of aqueous CO2 enrichment to enhance plant growth.
Cstainable is developing an artificial intelligence model to enhance the precision application of their aqueous CO2 enrichment system. With access to the Vineland TDS supported by the Technology Access Program, Cstainable will train their algorithm using metabolomic profiles of plants in response to the treatment. Experiments with 13C-labeled CO2 will be conducted at Vineland to track the incorporation of CO2 delivered by aqueous enrichment into plant metabolism, as indicated by 13C-enrichment of plant metabolites detected by mass spectrometry. Vineland provides advanced measurements and testing equipment as well as growing environments that makes this project possible.
This project will provide data that will enhance Cstainables understanding of CO2 uptake and incorporation into the plants. That data will help them refine their application protocols immediately, which will be used to program their systems in the field thus providing the opportunity to validate the outcomes of the experiment in a commercial/real world greenhouse setting. By adopting this technology, Ontario greenhouses could produce up to 200 metric tons of additional vegetables.
