Brilliant Photonics was founded in 2018 to conduct R&D to reduce operational and capital expenses for greenhouse production of fruits and vegetables. Through many collaborative partnerships with Universities and Colleges, the company as developed a high performance lighting solution. By employing innovations in LED flipchip and Thermal technologies Brilliant Photonics has created a liquid cooled lighting system that is ultra-efficient, bright, modular, reliable, and upgradeable. This results in new industry capabilities to more efficiently grow crops such as tomatoes, strawberries, and peppers, while achieving the highest efficiency by capturing waste heat for reuse.
In this project supported by the Technology Access Program, Brilliant Photonics proposes collaborating with the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (VRIC) TDS to advance their lighting platform by integrating AI optimization tools. Through this project, Brilliant Photonics will develop and integrate Artificial Intelligence and advanced photonics hardware into a unified solution that reduces lighting energy and equipment requirements to provide a greater return on investment for greenhouses who are looking to increase production capacity
This project has the potential to improve Ontario’s strength in the Controlled Agriculture sector by reducing the operational and capital costs of lighting equipment for greenhouse production of fruits and vegetables. The anticipated outcome delivers an AI-driven lighting optimization prototype that can potentially reduce the number of lights required and improve overall energy efficiency and agriculture yield through the optimization of spectrum, intensity and optics. This development will also position Brilliant Photonics for further investment.
