ApoSys Technologies Inc. is an Ontario-based company that develops advanced positioning and sensing systems for environments where GPS does not work, such as underground mines, tunnels, and other confined infrastructure. The company’s goal is to improve safety, productivity, and situational awareness in complex, high-risk environments by giving people and vehicles reliable knowledge of where they are and what is around them.
Through support from OCI’s Critical Industrial Technologies (CIT) Technology Access Program (TAP) and NORCAT Underground Centre, ApoSys is advancing its Underground GPS (UGPS), also known as GeoForge, a system that allows vehicles and equipment to determine their precise location underground without relying on satellites or fixed network infrastructure. The system uses a combination of LiDAR, inertial sensors, and intelligent software to first create a detailed map of the underground environment and then continuously localize vehicles on that map in real time, even in darkness, dust, or poor visibility. This level of accuracy is critical for preventing collisions, improving traffic coordination, and supporting emergency response.
The project focuses on validating and refining this technology in a realistic underground test environment. Successful demonstration will help prepare the system for commercial pilot deployments in Ontario mines and support future applications in tunneling, municipal infrastructure, and other GPS-denied settings. By enabling accurate underground positioning, ApoSys’s technology supports safer operations, more efficient workflows, and establishes a foundation for future automation in mining and other infrastructure sectors.
