LoopX is a mining technology company based in Waterloo and Sudbury, Ontario. Founded in 2022, the company specializes in AI-powered autonomy and safety systems designed for underground and surface mining.

Project

Through support from the CIT Sector Adoption Program, LoopX is developing BoomGuard, an AI-powered safety system for underground boom machines such as jumbo drills, bolters, shotcrete sprayers, and scalers. These machines present significant safety risks due to their size, limited visibility, and complex moving parts, and current solutions like virtual safety fences are often unreliable, which can produce false alarms, missing real hazards, or providing alerts too late. BoomGuard overcomes these challenges by combining AI with infrared cameras and 3D LiDAR to create configurable safety zones, deliver early context-based warnings, and automatically stop equipment when workers are at risk. Developed in collaboration with Cementation Canada Inc., the project combines LoopX’s expertise in AI and sensor fusion with real-world mining experience to deliver a practical, effective solution ready for adoption across the sector.

Impact

The BoomGuard project will position LoopX as a leader in AI-powered mining safety, with strong potential for adoption across Canada and globally. The company anticipates job growth in software, integration, and technical support roles while generating new revenue opportunities through commercial deployments. By delivering a validated, Ontario-made safety system, LoopX is contributing to safer mining practices, supporting local economic development, and advancing the province’s reputation in applied AI and mining innovation.
