Deepwater Robotics Inc.

About

Deepwater Robotics Inc. is a Toronto-based marine technology startup developing cost-effective autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) systems for large-scale subsea data collection. Founded in 2023, the company designs and builds fully integrated hardware and sensor platforms to provide detailed seabed data at significantly reduced cost compared to traditional survey methods. Its solutions are designed to support emerging industries such as subsea mineral extraction, offshore energy, and marine infrastructure monitoring

Project

With support from the CIT Development and Commercialization program and Cambrian College Centre for Smart Mining, Deepwater Robotics is advancing its AUV platform and sensor suite to enable high-resolution, large-scale surveying of polymetallic nodule regions in deep-ocean environments. The system is designed to operate autonomously over long distances without the need for a crewed support vessel, significantly reducing survey costs and improving access to remote locations. The project focuses on developing advanced acoustic and optical sensing capabilities alongside AI-based data processing tools that analyze collected data and deliver actionable insights. By combining low-cost hardware, long-range autonomy, and intelligent data analysis, the solution enables more efficient, scalable, and environmentally informed subsea exploration.

Impact

The project will advance Deepwater Robotics’ subsea survey technology toward commercialization, enabling more accessible and cost-effective data collection for emerging deep-sea industries. By improving the quality and availability of subsea data, the solution supports more responsible resource development and informed decision-making. Outcomes include expanded market opportunities, increased competitiveness in global subsea technology markets, and strengthened Ontario participation in the growing ocean technology and critical minerals sectors.
