Next Phase Biosolutions

About

Next Phase BioSolutions works with farms, abattoirs, and processors to recover and upcycle animal by-products generated during meat production. Many of these materials are currently underutilized or discarded, despite having clear value in food, pet nutrition, and other downstream applications. By improving coordination and traceability, the company aims to reduce waste, improve resource efficiency, and support the development of value-added processing within Ontario.

Project

With support from the Technology Access Program, Next Phase BioSolutions is developing and testing a digital tracking and coordination system for animal by-products generated at slaughterhouses. The system uses QR-based event tracking and time-based workflows to record when materials are first collected, how long they can safely remain on site, and when they require pickup.

To support accountability across multiple independent stakeholders, the project incorporates a blockchain-based verification layer. Key operational records are cryptographically anchored to a blockchain, creating a tamper-evident audit trail that can be independently verified by partners and regulators. The CMIT Technology Development Site will be used to test and refine the system in a controlled environment prior to deployment at commercial slaughterhouses.

Impact & Outcomes

This project will demonstrate how digital coordination combined with blockchain verification can improve the management of animal by-products across the meat industry. By enabling more consistent tracking and coordinated pickups, Next Phase BioSolutions expects to divert a significant portion of material from disposal into productive use. As the system is commercialized and adopted more broadly, the company anticipates revenue growth and increased full-time employment within Ontario.
